In a surprise announcement, developers Ninja Theory reviled a free VR update will be coming to the Steam version of Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice on July 31. Oculus Rift and HTC Vive owners will be able to explore Helheim within a full 360 degree perspective. Though this will require some extra beefy hardware, with a Nvidia GTX 1080 recommend.
In a developer video, the team describes their VR experiments dating back to their May 2016 360° video. Since then, the process largely focused on creating a sickness-free experience while retaining the game's 3rd person perspective and free movement. Ninja Theory claims this was achieved by using the Senua as an anchor point, with players guiding her direction by looking left or right. Prolonged directional facing will cause a gradual shift, allowing players to see in all directions.
Ninja Theory's Tameem Antoniades explains this extra work benefited all versions of the game "We optimized the art, shaders, characters, landscapes, post-processing FX, anything we could to get us to 90fps...But it was worth it, because the optimizations we did to the VR version of Hellblade also benefited the non-VR version. Which is why Hellblade looks and runs so well on reasonably spec'd PC and consoles"
Released in 2017, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice has received positive fan and critical feedback, include a steady stream of nominations and awards. Earlier this month, Hellblade won for Best Writing in a Video Game at the Writers' Guild of Great Britain Awards.
