The days of Guitar Hero and Rock Band are a distant memory for most western players. But over in Japan, rhythm games have remained a consistently popular genre. With a steady output of quirky percussion, dancing, and guitar titles still released in arcades and home consoles every year.
Bandai-Namco have announced the cult classic Taiko no Tatsujin series will be returning to North America and debuting in Europe this fall. The Nintendo Switch Exclusive "Drum ‘n’ Fun!" will utilize the Joy-Con's accelerometer and gyroscope for motion controlled drumming. Nintendo characters Kirby and a Splatoon Squid will also be selectable in the traditional drum mode, with more familiar names to be announced. Outside the main song challenges, up to four players will be able to play together in the new mini-game mode.
The PlayStation 4's Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum Session! will take a more hard edged approach. In a press release, Bandai-Namco highlighted the game's online features including competitive ranked play. Much like Drum ‘n’ Fun! there will be plenty of cameos in Drum Session! With Hello Kitty, Tekken's Heihachi Mishima, and Pac-Man already listed to appear.
Unlike the Switch version, Drum Session!'s control scheme was not mentioned. The Taiko no Tatsujin franchise traditionally uses bachi sticks on a large taiko style drum. Home ports are often functional with a bachi accessory, though the Bandai-Namco have not yet announced a western controller release.
Both Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun! and Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum Session! will release in Norther America and Europe on November 2nd.
