THQ Nordic has announced their acquisition of HandyGames. The developer is best known for their free to play mobile games Clouds & Sheep, Townsmen, and Farm Invasion USA. Though their most recent projects have seem a greater push towards virtual reality with Devil and the Fairy and Townsmen VR releasing earlier this year for high end PC headsets.
In a press release, Klemens Kreuzer (Managing Director at THQ Nordic GmbH) “It is a true win-win situation for all parties involved, as HandyGames perfectly complements the setup of the rest of our group as the new “go to”-publisher for small- and midsized developers and projects and will benefit from our network and infrastructure in return. In joining forces with HandyGames, THQ Nordic is tapping into the VR Games segment, and gains access to one of Europe´s most powerful mobile games distribution network“
HandyGames' acquisition is the latest in a series of big moves for THQ Nordic. Originally known as Nordic Games, the company purchases the defunct THQ brand and select properties in 2014 and rebranding itself in 2016. Since then, THQ Nordic has purchased a number of developers, catalogues, and labels such as NovaLogic, Digital Reality, and Black Forest Games.
This past February saw their largest investment, spending a combined $142 million through cash and stock to acquire Koch Media. Reuniting the Saints Row, Dead Island, and Metro franchises under the THQ banner once again.
THQ Nordics console efforts have largely been rereleases, with Red Faction: Guerrilla and De Blob 2 receiving current gen ports this year. However this November's Darksiders 3 and the upcoming Biomutant will see the company's first major effort in the AAA space.
